Like a lot of artists on Drag City—a label Bill Callahan has been on for almost 30 years—folk music is approached from a place of both post-punk and post-hippie. He is cranky, but generous, the kind of performer who, even in jest, seems to treat his circumstances as a gift. Callahan is in his mid-50s now, so with that in mind, Gold Record plays like nostalgia: Remember when we had plans? Yeah. That was good.
