It started with J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) hearing a mix that Madlib put together in the Bomb Shelter of Dilla's beats with Madlib rapping over them. He was impressed enough to call up Stones Throw mastermind Peanut Butter Wolf directly to get the ball moving on a Madlib / J Dilla collaboration. Jaylib became a quick reality, so the producers started sending each other beats to rap over. As each were situated in their home towns (Dilla in Detroit and Madlib in L.A.), they fleshed out what is now known as Champion Sound.
Champion Sound is unquestionably one of the most exciting and inventive hip-hop productions of the early 2000s: Jay Dee's characteristically bass-heavy breaks and Madlib's wonderfully off-kilter quasi-organic dutchery compliment each other perfectly, and their best moments here easily rank among their personal highs. This album was the first of the Madlib duo collaboration albums made during the 2000s.
Heavyweight double vinyl produced by Stones Throw Records in 2011.
