White Chalk is PJ Harvey's darkest album yet - which is saying something. But it's also one of her most beautiful. Inspired by the fragility and timelessness of chalk lines, and backed mostly by solo piano, White Chalk presents Harvey as almost unrecognizable compared to the snarling 50-Foot Queenie of the 90's - which paradoxically, given that so few artists challenge themselves to change their sound as much as she does, it's a quintessentially PJ Harvey move.
